This is the work that single-handedly changed public opinion about the American Revolution. Nearly every single person who has ever read this book will agree that Thomas Paine held nothing back whenever he was writing this monumental work. "Common Sense", published only six months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, is one of the greatest works of this time period.
One of the first things that I noticed about "Common Sense" was its older-style English. Despite this, however, I did not find it difficult to read. In "Common Sense", Thomas Paine argued that if America was fighting only for a repeal of outrageous taxation, then it was fighting for too little. In "Common Sense", he also argued that England not only SHOULD NOT rule over America, but that England COULD NOT rule over America.
This book was given to me by a family member. She said that it had only cost her a dollar. It only took me two days of light reading to finish this book, yet it gave me a glimpse into the America of the Revolution. It is one of the most influential books I have ever read, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history or politics.
